At the start of a new year, it’s tempting to focus straight on what you want to achieve. Bigger targets, new projects, tighter plans. But before you look at what you want to do next, there’s a more important question worth sitting with. Who do you actually need to become to lead your business into its next chapter?

Most businesses don’t stall because of a lack of ideas or ambition. They stall because the leader hasn’t had the space, support, or confidence to evolve alongside the business. As your business changes, the version of you that started it may no longer be the version it needs now.

Why growth demands a different version of you

When you first set up your business, success probably depended on your energy, drive, and willingness to do everything yourself. That approach can work for a while. But as the business grows, those same habits can quietly become limitations.

Leading a bigger, more complex business often requires different skills. Less doing, more deciding. Less reacting, more guiding. If you keep leading in the same way you always have, you may find yourself overwhelmed, frustrated, or constantly pulled back into the detail.

The gap between where you are and where you need to be

Many business leaders sense this gap but struggle to name it. They know something feels off. Decisions take longer. The team feels dependent. The business seems to rely too heavily on them. But instead of addressing that gap, they work harder to compensate.

That gap is usually not about capability. It’s about identity. The business is asking you to step into a different role, but you’re still operating from the old one. Recognising that is not a failure. It’s a sign that you’re ready for the next stage.

Letting go of the habits that got you here

One of the hardest parts of leadership growth is letting go of what used to work. Being hands on. Being the fixer. Being the person with all the answers. These traits probably helped you build the business in the first place.

But holding on to them for too long can stop others from stepping up. It can also leave you stuck in the weeds, exhausted and disconnected from the bigger picture. Growth often means choosing discomfort now in exchange for sustainability later.

The leader your team needs next

Your team does not need you to have all the answers. What they need is clarity, consistency, and trust. They need to know where the business is going and how their role contributes to that direction.

That requires a leader who can communicate clearly, set boundaries, and resist the urge to micromanage. It also requires the confidence to let others take responsibility, even when they do things differently from how you would do them.

Leadership is shaped by awareness, not titles

Becoming the leader your business needs is not about job titles or hierarchy. It’s about awareness. Awareness of your strengths, your blind spots, and the impact you have on others. It’s about noticing when your behaviour is helping and when it’s holding things back.

This kind of awareness doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from reflection, feedback, and sometimes having the right conversations with people who can challenge your thinking in a constructive way.

This is where leadership becomes personal

At some point, leadership stops being about strategy alone and becomes personal. It asks you to look at how you handle pressure, how you make decisions, and how comfortable you are with change. It asks you to question long held beliefs about control, success, and what it means to be a good leader.

As a Business Coach, I often see that the biggest breakthroughs happen when leaders stop asking what their business needs next and start asking who they need to be to lead it well. That shift can unlock clarity, confidence, and a much healthier relationship with the business itself.
