There’s something about this time of year that quietly shifts things. The days feel longer, the clocks have changed, and there’s a subtle sense that things should be moving again. But just because the pace picks up does not mean you are heading in the right direction.

In business, it’s easy to stay busy without ever stepping back. You fix what’s in front of you, respond to what feels urgent, and keep things ticking along. But every now and then, it’s worth asking a more uncomfortable question. Are you still solving the right problems, or just the most visible ones?

The trap of solving what’s obvious

Most leaders spend their time dealing with what’s loud. Customer complaints, missed deadlines, team issues, cash flow worries. These things demand attention, so they naturally rise to the top of your list.

But the most obvious problems are not always the most important ones. They are often symptoms of something deeper. If you only ever deal with what is visible, you can spend months fixing the same issue in slightly different ways without ever getting to the root of it.

When activity replaces progress

There is a difference between being productive and being effective. You can have a full diary, tick off tasks all day, and still feel like nothing is really changing. That is usually a sign that your focus is slightly off.

This time of year, when energy starts to return, can make that even harder to spot. You feel more motivated, more willing to act, and that can lead to more activity. But more activity does not automatically mean more progress.

Spring clarity and shifting perspective

Spring has a way of bringing things into focus. The lighter mornings and longer evenings create space to think more clearly. It is a natural moment to lift your head and look at the bigger picture, rather than just what is directly in front of you.

If you allow yourself even a small pause, you may start to notice patterns. The same conversations repeating. The same bottlenecks appearing. The same frustrations coming up again and again. That is usually a sign that you are solving around the problem, not through it.

Are you fixing symptoms or causes?

One of the most powerful questions you can ask is simple. Is this the real problem, or just the result of something else?

For example, if your team is missing deadlines, the issue might not be time management. It might be unclear priorities. If your sales are inconsistent, it might not be effort. It might be your positioning or offer. Getting underneath the surface takes more time, but it leads to far better results.

Making time to ask better questions

Most leaders do not struggle with effort. They struggle with direction. And direction comes from asking better questions, not just working harder.

Block out time to think. Not to plan, not to react, just to reflect. What is actually moving the business forward right now? What feels like noise? What keeps coming back no matter how many times you deal with it?

Refocusing before the next push

As the pace builds again, it is tempting to charge ahead. But a small reset now can save months of wasted effort later. You do not need to overhaul everything. You just need to make sure your energy is pointed at the right things.

Because solving the wrong problems well still leaves you stuck. Solving the right problems, even slowly, is what creates real progress.
