We’re meant to be in love with our goals, right? That’s what the motivational posters say. They should fire us up, get us out of bed in the morning, and keep us pushing through the tough bits. But what happens when they don’t? What happens when the goals you set with all the right intentions now feel… a bit flat?

It’s a tricky place to be. Especially at this time of year, when the energy of January is fading and the pressure to ‘keep going’ is quietly building. If you’ve lost that spark with your business goals, you’re not alone. And you’re not broken. But it might be time to step back and ask yourself a few important questions.

Were they your goals in the first place?

Sometimes we set goals because we think we should. Because someone said that’s what success looks like. Because it matches what our competitors are doing. But chasing a version of success that doesn’t actually belong to you is like being in a relationship for the optics. It doesn’t last, and it doesn’t feel right.

So ask yourself honestly: Did I want this? Or did I just think I should want it?

Are your goals still connected to your “why”?

Even good goals can go stale if they outgrow the reason you set them. Businesses evolve. You evolve. What mattered most a year ago might not feel as urgent or exciting today.

It’s okay to let go. It’s okay to refresh. You don’t have to cling to goals that no longer serve you just to prove your commitment. In fact, one of the best ways to show care for your business is to be willing to change course when the energy shifts.

Like, love, and reconnecting

In the spirit of Valentine’s month—yes, even in business—this is also a reminder that relationships ebb and flow. You might not always love your business. You might go through seasons where you just like it, or even feel a bit disconnected from it altogether.

That doesn’t mean it’s time to walk away. Sometimes, it’s about remembering what brought you together in the first place. Reconnecting with your deeper reasons. Making space to work on the business instead of always being in the thick of it.

What do you want more of?

A practical way to refresh your goals is to stop thinking in terms of achievement, and start thinking in terms of experience. What do you want to feel more of this year? Freedom? Excitement? Peace of mind? Confidence?

Then ask: what kinds of goals would help create those feelings, not just tick boxes?

This shift can take you from “I should hit £X revenue” to “I want a business that gives me time back on Fridays.” Or from “We need five new clients this month” to “We want clients we genuinely enjoy working with.”

Small changes, big difference

Falling back in love with your business doesn’t always require a grand reinvention. Often, it’s small changes that bring the spark back. A new project that excites you. A bit of delegation that gives you space to think. One honest conversation that clears the air.

If your goals have lost their shine, maybe it’s not about motivation. It’s about meaning.

Let it be personal

At REACH, we often say that your business should serve your life, not the other way around. So if you’re feeling off-track, don’t just power through. Step back. Reconnect. Ask better questions. And give yourself permission to like your business again… before you fall back in love with it.
