Bad things can happen to your business if you take your time for granted

Getting our time under control is never easy, especially when running a business. And it’s not just the number of things you do, it’s the quality that also matters. Most business owners do a lot of stuff at any given point of time, but that doesn’t mean they’re productive. More often than not, it actually means they’re not being productive, because they’re more likely doing things they’re not supposed to.

One of the pillars of my Cycle of Business Success is Time Mastery. It’s what allows a business owner to have the opportunity to work on more important things instead of wasting time on things that don’t really help grow the business. If we cannot get our time effectively managed, we’re continually going to be chasing our tail. Every one of us is given the same amount of time

We often hear others complain about how much time some people have that they’re able to do so many things, but what they seem to forget is the fact that we all have 24 hours in a day — the exact same amount of time is given to every one of us. So why is it that some people seem to accomplish more in a day compared to most of us?

It’s not just the number of hours we have, it’s way we utilise that time that matters. Again, productivity is not based on quantity, but quality. It’s about whether we spend that resource on things that are important, versus wasting time on things that you could have delegated to other people to do.

Time management is fundamental

One of the most important questions I ask my clients is whether they value time as a precious resource. Do they value it? Or do they just let it slip through their hands?

The reason why time management is one of the first things that I believe every business owner must master is because it reinforces all the other skills and knowledge about how to run a business successfully. You can read all the books and use all the tools at your disposal, but if you haven’t mastered your time, none of those other resources will work. You’ve got to have the time to execute all those plans, review all those strategies, manage your people, and run all those systems.

It starts with a decision

The fact of the matter is that no one else will be able to get your time under control except yourself. Even I as a Business Coach can’t do that for you, or anyone else for that matter. It’s your time, and only you can manage it.

You have to make that decision that from now on, you will use your time to the fullest, which means you will treat it as a valuable resource that should not be wasted on unimportant things. That decision is coupled with a great deal of discipline, practice, and an open mind.
