What will you do differently in 2021 to attract more business success?

What a year 2020 has been. Words can’t even describe the rollercoaster ride we’ve all experienced. I’m guessing 2020 will be, for most of us, a year we will never forget.

The important thing is that we learn from it all — the bad and the good. In business, you can’t afford to have short-term memory loss. You can’t rush forward into the new year and keep doing all the wrong stuff you did this year, or keep not doing all the things you should’ve done.

Let’s all learn from our shortcomings in the past year and become better at leading our team and managing our business in 2021. Here are some resolutions to help us get a running start.

Re-visit the basics

There’s no better way to start the year fresh than going back to basics. The past 12 months have buried the basics under a pile of crises, people problems, financial collapses and endless strategic plans and tactics. You’ll need to dig up the basics again so you’ll have a clean, untainted perspective going into the new year. Remember why you’re doing all of this in the first place — your personal and business whys. Think about what the business stands for; its mission and vision.

Fully embrace technology and leverage as much as you can

Before the year ends, make a list of all your business technology need to see what things need to be upgraded or streamlined. Maybe it’s time to implement that online ordering system, or maybe your team could use new computers. Maybe you need a CRM to add more efficiency in converting prospects to paying customers. Maybe your employee files and time records need digitalization. It’s already 2021 in a few weeks, so if your business is still living off of 90s technology, then your competitors will leave you behind. Start the year off right by improving your digital systems.

Show your people the future

The success of a business depends significantly on your team’s ability to carry out their responsibilities individually and collectively. Their commitment to do that depends on how happy they are, that’s why it’s important to create an environment where they feel they can progress professionally. It’s one of the biggest reasons why people stay in a job, especially those who excel and aspire to become leaders someday. They need to see the future. If you haven’t been showing them a pathway for them to develop, then the next year is the best time to start.

Stop managing through telepathy

A lot of business owners get really frustrated when their people fail to do what are expected of them, when the truth is that the expectation were not exactly communicated in a clear, tangible manner. You need to tell people exactly what it is you expect of them. Start with clearly-defined roles and responsibilities. An actual document that stipulates every single thing that an employee is expected to carry out. Then proceed to establishing Key Performance Indicators and coaching progressions. Assuming that people already know what’s inside that brilliant mind of yours will do no good. You need to actually say the words or put them on a document so everyone is on the same page.

Determine what is not working, drop it and move on

You won’t always know what will work in business, but you certainly have to know exactly what’s not working. Perhaps your sales method isn’t going well, or maybe one of your products isn’t selling or a specific partnership isn’t working out. Evaluate these weaknesses and determine whether it’s time to drop them. The worst thing you can do is to repeat the same mistakes. Don’t invest a lot of energy into trying to make the unworkable workable. Sometimes you need to move on for something more calculated and promising.
