A few weeks ago, I was looking at places to visit for a short break with the family next year. I’d found a lovely place recently, saved it, told myself I’d come back to it when I had more time. Of course, when I finally went back to book it, the price had gone up. Not by a little. By a lot. And the dates I really wanted had completely gone.

It’s that familiar moment where you close the laptop, sigh, and think, “Why didn’t I just book it when I first looked?”

We all do it. We wait for a better moment. A clearer diary. A quieter week. But all that waiting ends up costing far more than the decision we delayed.

I laughed at myself for a minute because right now my inbox is full of Black Friday deals, early access offers, countdown timers, and “last chance” messages. Everywhere you look, the message is clear: act now or miss out. And whether we love or hate the marketing around it, there is a truth hiding underneath. Hesitation has a price.

It made me think about how often the same thing happens in business.

Opportunities don’t usually disappear all at once. They slip away quietly. A potential client you meant to follow up with. A difficult conversation you keep postponing. A change you know you need to make but push to “next month.” Before you know it, something that would have been simple and affordable becomes complicated, stressful, or expensive. Waiting has a cost, and it is nearly always higher than planning.

We see this all the time when people come to Coaching. Leaders who finally reach out after months of feeling stuck. Leaders who wish they had tightened their team structure sooner. Leaders who realise a lot of the stress they carry could have been eased with a bit of forward planning. Not perfect planning. Just enough planning. Enough to take control instead of letting the year happen to them.

And the interesting thing is that once they start making decisions earlier, everything feels calmer. They get ahead of problems instead of reacting to them. They see opportunities sooner. They feel more in control. It is never the big decisions that make the biggest difference. It is the small ones made at the right time.

So if there is something you have been thinking about doing, changing, or putting in place before the year ends, maybe take this as a gentle nudge. The perfect moment might not appear, but the right moment probably already has.
