Happy New Year!

We all know that familiar pressure that creeps in at the start of January. That feeling like you should be back at full speed. This used to happen to me every year. I’d come back from the break with good intentions, but there’s an almost immediate pull to get busy. Emails, meetings, plans, lists. It’s like there’s a quiet voice saying, “Right, let’s crack on now.” And if I’m honest, I have to consciously stop myself from jumping straight into everything all at once.

Because I’ve learned that starting the year hectic doesn’t always lead to the best year. It usually just leads to feeling stretched far too early. We see so many business leaders start the year at lightning pace, filling their diary with so much activity, hoping momentum will follow. What usually happens instead is exhaustion, frustration, and that uncomfortable feeling of being busy without really moving forward.

January has a habit of creating expectations that don’t quite match reality and then when those expectations don’t happen, people assume something’s wrong. It isn’t. It’s normal.

There’s a difference between doing more and doing what actually matters. Being busy can feel reassuring, especially after a break, but usefulness comes from intention. From choosing where your energy goes, not just reacting to what lands first in your inbox.

And here’s another thing: Starting the year too fast can mean you carry last year’s habits straight into a new diary. The same patterns. The same pressures. The same feeling of running just to keep up. Slowing down slightly at the beginning isn’t about losing momentum. It’s about setting direction. Give yourself time to think before committing to everything again.

The strongest starts I see are rarely loud or frantic. They’re calm. Thoughtful. Leaders who allow themselves a bit of space to reflect before deciding what deserves their time. Those who resist the pressure to look like they’ve got everything sorted, and instead focus on getting clear.

January doesn’t need you to be at full pace. It needs you to be present, intentional, and honest about where you want to apply your effort this year. Because being busy isn’t the goal. Making progress is.
