Why it’s important to work on the business, not in the business
To run a successful business, it is important to know how to utilise one’s strengths. Many business owners fall into the trap of micromanaging and believing they can handle everything better than anyone else. However, this results in wasting time on tasks that could be delegated to others, preventing them from effectively leading the business.
As a Business Coach, I advise clients to focus on leading their business, rather than getting bogged down in day-to-day tasks.
As the leader of an enterprise, a lot of stuff will need your attention, so you need to learn how to filter each one based on urgency and importance. But what does that even mean? Remember, not because something is urgent doesn’t mean it’s important.
Business owners often have a lot of things on their plate, but that doesn’t mean they have to do all of those tasks. Learning how to prioritise is crucial. Most tasks are important and urgent so they have to be dealt with promptly. But some tasks are neither important nor urgent, and those are just distractions that keep you from being truly productive.
What is The Zone?
That’s when you take on responsibilities that are not urgent but extremely important in growing your company. Being in The Zone means you’re working on the business and not in the business. My aim as a Business Coach is to get my clients into that zone for 20% of their working day because that is where the real money is made and value is added.
For every minute you spend in that zone and being proactive with your time, you’re going save 10 minutes having to be reactive. It’s a 10 to 1 ratio. Surely we owe it to ourselves to get into that zone.
As the leader of your business, you are responsible for recognising problems and delegating solutions. You are responsible for establishing objectives and planning for the future. You should be the foremost person in your company who is strongly motivated to achieve business growth. Every minute that you spend working on tasks that your people can take care of is a minute that you are not planning, strategising, and envisioning the future of your business.
You’re not really making the most out of your precious time if you’re busy putting out fires and tinkering with every single facet of your business. You need to learn to trust your people and the system, so you can focus on the things that really matter. No one else is going to have to concentrate on growing your business but yourself.
Our Cycle of Business Success Workshops are game-changers for business owners. They love what they see, and it completely fires them up.
