What does it really mean to be successful in your role as a business owner?

There’s nothing more inspiring for business owners to make themselves better in all aspects of business management than the start of the new year. And one of the most crucial of those aspects is leadership. Different people have different ways of understanding what leadership means, but what we can all agree on is that the bottom line of being a good leader is that you inspire confidence and respect through actions and not just through words.

If you want to become a great leader around your employees — which of course you do — you can start by creating an environment where people flourish. To achieve this, you need to have a particular mindset to influence those who are around you.

Always advocate for the growth of your team

Some leaders have a fear that their craftiest, most hardworking employees might end up overshadowing them or making them look bad in front of others. This sometimes causes their reluctance to share insights or data or to enable authority.

If you want your business to succeed, you have to love to see your people grow. Instead of fearing it, groom and train your potential leaders. Studies show that the top priority for job seekers when applying for a position is the opportunity for growth. Great leaders want their best people to make the most of their potential, and they know that good feedback and guidance are invaluable.

Give credit to exceptional skills and behaviours

Sometimes, business leaders tend to lump people together, trying to stimulate, incentivise and train everyone in the same way as clones. Exceptional leaders treat people as unique individuals, recognising the fact that everyone has their own drive and style of learning. There’s a certain reward that makes each employee tick, and the best leaders will stop at nothing to determine what that is.

Make your team feel that work can and should be enjoyable

If you see work as something that everyone has to do, whether they want to or not, then you’re most likely not going to get the push that you need from your employees. Your existence must not revolve around making sure that your employees are absolutely knackered at the end of the day because they’ve all worked too hard. If you can find a way to enjoy your job despite all the stresses and never-ending problems, then believe that everyone else can too.

Make them feel like they don’t have to drag their bodies to work every day. Recognise accomplishments and provide people with positive feedback when they do good work. Give them the opportunity to appreciate how they contribute to the big picture.

Allow healthy conflict of ideas and methods

The problem with most leaders is that they always want their employees’ opinions to align with their own, and therefore, they favor only those who do not have the guts to disagree with them. Only goals should be aligned. Don’t force people to think similarly as you do and reward those who would follow their lead without any reluctance or doubt.

I can immediately spot a great business leader just by knowing that he actively deals with a diverse range of personalities and philosophies. They expose themselves to new and progressive ways of discerning and making decisions.

Do not look at change as a threat

Do you always go by how you’ve always done it? Do you believe that change is unnecessary and that it causes more harm than good? Then you will most likely burn your business to the ground. Great leaders view change as an opportunity for improvement and evolution. They try their best to constantly adapt their methods and embrace change to stay ahead of the curve.
