Last week was a busy one for us at REACH. We had our biggest workshop ever in terms of attendees, which as always was full of energy, conversations and ideas. Those kinds of days are brilliant, but they also leave you feeling like there’s plenty still to catch up on afterwards.
The following day was our wedding anniversary. Despite the busyness of the week, we made a point of stepping away from work and going out for a spa day together. No laptops, no talking about plans for the next event, just taking the time to celebrate and enjoy the moment.
It reminded me how easy it is for leaders to let the important things in life quietly slide when work becomes demanding. When your diary is full and your attention is constantly pulled towards the next task, the personal parts of life can slowly get pushed further down the list.
But those parts matter more than we sometimes realise. At REACH. we often talk about maintaining your Peak State Checklist. The things that help you show up as the best version of yourself as a leader. That might include exercise, time to think clearly, or simply stepping away from work long enough to reset your energy.
Personal relationships are a big part of that too. Whether it’s time with family, friends, or a partner, those moments away from the day-to-day pressures of business help keep you grounded and focused. They remind you why you’re working hard in the first place.
For Jas and me, working together every day means our worlds overlap a lot. That’s something we’re very grateful for, but it also makes it even more important to create time where work isn’t the centre of the conversation. Taking that space helps us come back to the business with clearer thinking and better energy.
Many business leaders struggle with this balance. They give everything to their teams, their clients and their goals, but forget that their own wellbeing and relationships are part of what keeps them effective. Looking after those areas of life isn’t a distraction from leadership. It’s part of it.
So here’s something to reflect on this week: What helps you stay in your best state as a leader, and when was the last time you made space for it?
