A few weeks ago, Jas and I were at Pride Park watching Derby vs. Norwich. It was one of those games where, within the first ten minutes, you could already tell something wasn’t working. The team just looked flat. Passes were off, energy was low, and by halftime, Derby had managed only about 20% possession. It was hard to watch.
But then the second half came, and everything changed. The manager made a few adjustments and they came back out looking like a completely different team. Suddenly, there was movement, confidence, and purpose. From nil-nil at halftime, they went on to win one-nil after David Ozoh scored in the 55th minute. Despite Norwich’s control of the ball the entire game, Derby capitalised on that key moment and held firm defensively right to the end.
Obviously, we were over the moon after that spectacular win, and on the way home, I thought about how powerful change can be when you stop watching from the sidelines and decide to do something different. Sometimes we keep playing the same formation in business, even when we know it’s not working. We tell ourselves we’ll change things “next quarter” or “after this busy spell,” but nothing improves until we actually make the change. As Jas often says, change nothing, and nothing changes.
It doesn’t always have to be a complete overhaul right away. Sometimes, even just a few clear adjustments can make all the difference. A tweak to your focus, a better structure for your time, or a fresh look at your team’s roles. But when you do take action, the results can be immediate, even if it’s just a modest percentage improvement.
