Do your numbers really define your future?

It’s been a couple of weeks now since the most recent exam results were published. Even though we weren’t directly involved this year (phew!), the headlines still made me pause to think. All those nerves and expectations riding on one piece of paper.

This time last year, both our daughters were starting new chapters, one heading to university, the other beginning an apprenticeship. Now we’re a year in, and as always, life has unfolded in ways we couldn’t have predicted. The truth is, very few of us end up doing what we imagined at 16 or 18. And the ones who do? Most have still taken a winding road to get there. And that got me thinking.

In the world of business, we can fall into the same mindset we had as teenagers, thinking success is determined by a single figure or outcome. But it rarely is.

We tell ourselves things like “This is just how our market is,” or “This is how we’ve always done it,” or “This is the way the business runs, so we just need to make the best of it.” We let old results, old systems, and old thinking define what’s possible, just like a piece of paper once did.

September has that “back to school” energy, but maybe it’s also time to ask: What if you could start again now? Not throw everything away, but choose a new chapter. Reset your goals. Challenge old assumptions. Take yourself off autopilot and back into proactive mode.

Because unlike GCSEs or A-levels, business success isn’t about one test or one set of scores. It’s about what you do next. About continually learning, adapting, and deciding where you want to go, then building the structure, team, and habits that will get you there.
