22 October 2025

It’s the time of year when many business leaders start clinging a little tighter to routines, projects, habits, or people that no longer serve them. Maybe because it’s comfortable. Maybe because letting go feels like giving up. But if you want a strong finish to the year (and a clearer start to the next one), you need to get honest about what’s no longer working.

Letting go can be uncomfortable. But it’s also where growth starts. And just like we declutter our homes or wardrobes when the seasons shift, our businesses benefit from a good autumn clear-out too.

The comfort trap: why we hang on

In business, familiarity can be deceiving. You keep running that same marketing campaign even though the returns have dipped. You keep using the same process even though it’s painfully slow. You keep working with that supplier even though they’re no longer the best fit.

We do this because it feels easier than change. But comfort isn’t always efficient. In fact, holding on too long can cost time, money, and team morale. This is the perfect time to ask: What are we clinging to out of habit, not strategy?

The warning signs are usually there

You know that sense of friction when something that used to feel smooth now feels clunky? That’s usually the first signal. But it’s easy to overlook when you’re busy or distracted. Other signs include frequent mistakes, low engagement, bottlenecks, or things taking longer than they should.

It might be a system that’s outgrown its purpose. Or a role that’s no longer needed. Or a project that no longer aligns with your bigger picture. Recognising these signs early helps you make decisions before problems grow.

Making space for better things

Letting go isn’t just about cutting things out, it’s about making space. When you clear out the clutter in your workflows, your priorities, or even your calendar, you give better things room to grow.

Whether that’s a new strategy, a fresh hire, or just time to think again, the space you create is valuable. And it can be the difference between coasting through the rest of the year or finishing it on a high.

It’s not just about the “stuff”

Sometimes what we need to release isn’t a system or a project. Sometimes it’s a belief. Maybe you’ve been holding onto an old idea about what leadership “should” look like. Or clinging to unrealistic standards you’ve set for yourself. Letting go of mental clutter is just as powerful as ditching physical inefficiencies.

Challenge those internal scripts. They might be the very thing holding you back from making bolder moves or trusting your team more deeply.

What would you drop if you weren’t afraid?

That’s a great question to ask this month. If you could stop doing one thing in your business without fear or guilt, what would it be? That question cuts straight to the things you’re tolerating instead of choosing. And it often shines a light on the changes you already know you need to make.

Autumn isn’t an ending. It’s a clearing.

If you’ve been feeling like your business is heavy with “stuff,” this time of year offers a natural pause point. Let go of what’s slowing you down. You’ll think more clearly, lead more decisively, and make room for the ideas that truly deserve your time and energy.

Not everything that starts with you needs to finish with you. The best leaders know when to hold on and when to let go.
