Isn’t memory a funny thing?

A song comes on the radio, maybe something you haven’t heard for decades, and suddenly you’re word perfect, singing along like you never stopped.

And yet, on the other hand, how many times do we forget the everyday things that are actually important? The calls to make, the emails to reply to, the small tasks that keep the business moving. Somehow, the lyrics to a song from the 90s are there instantly (I’m sure the Oasis reunion has got plenty of us singing old favourites again), but the thing you promised yourself you’d do this morning is gone by lunchtime.

And the trouble with forgetting those little but important things is that they pile up. Before you know it, you’re left constantly catching, and that’s when you really do “look back in anger”.

That’s because our memory was never designed to carry everything. It holds onto repetition, emotion, and stories, which is why songs stick, but it doesn’t cope well with a never-ending list of jobs and responsibilities. And in business, trying to rely on memory alone is where things start to slip.

This is why systems and processes matter so much.

They take the pressure off. They give you a framework so you don’t have to constantly remember every detail. They stop things falling through the cracks and let you focus on what really matters, rather than carrying everything in your head.

If remembering song lyrics proves anything, it’s that repetition and clarity work. And when you build that into your business, you create a structure that supports you and your team, so you can spend less time worrying about what you’ve forgotten and more time driving things forward.

At REACH, we’re here to help you put those kinds of systems in place. Because when you’ve got your business running smoothly, you really can feel like a “rock n’ roll star”.
