07 January 2025

As the new year begins, I’ve been reflecting on the usual rush to set ambitious resolutions. It’s so easy to get caught up in the mindset of doing more—more goals, more responsibilities, more pressure. But this year, I’m approaching things differently. Alongside thinking about what I want to start doing, I’m also asking myself: What do I need to stop doing?

One of the first things I want to leave behind in 2024 is the idea of justice as the universe’s organising principle. Sometimes, life doesn’t unfold the way we think it should. Outcomes don’t always match effort. Instead of waiting for justice to play its hand, I want to shift my focus to patterns—what habits, choices, and actions can I cultivate that will make a difference in my life? This mindset will motivate me to take ownership and create meaningful progress, rather than waiting for fairness to play catch-up.

Another thing I’ve realised is how often we push ourselves too hard. This year, I’m making a conscious effort to be kinder to myself. That means setting realistic timescales, planning for breaks, and making space for the things that bring me joy—whether it’s a walk with the dogs, a date night with Jas, a nice run in perfect weather, or simply taking a moment to breathe.

I’m letting go of the fear of mediocrity—that nagging inner voice that if we’re not pushing ourselves to the limit, we’re somehow failing. For me, this can lead to extremes: working too much, overcommitting, or striving endlessly in the pursuit of “enough.” But whose voice am I actually trying to appease? Is it really mine, or is it some echo from the past that I haven’t moved on from? This year, I want to tune into my voice, the one that knows what feels right for me, and let go of the pressure to please that phantom critic.

Ultimately, it’s not just about saying “yes” to the right things, but also learning to say “no” to what doesn’t serve me. I’m letting go of the guilt of unfinished to-do lists and the expectation of perfection. Because sometimes, what we don’t do is just as important as what we choose to take on.

As business owners, it’s easy to feel like every moment needs to be spent driving forward, chasing targets, or solving problems. But how often do we stop to ask ourselves if we’re really heading in the direction we want? Are we building the life we imagined when we first started out? Or are we caught in habits that no longer make us better?

Here’s a challenge for you: Take some time to write two lists. One for the things you want to start doing this year—things that bring energy, fulfillment, and joy. And another for the things you need to stop doing—the habits, behaviours, or commitments that drain you. Even small changes can have a huge impact over time. I would love to read your lists so please share!

As we kick off another year, I want to thank each of you for being part of our fantastic community. You inspire us daily. Let’s make 2025 the year we not only work smarter but live better. And remember, REACH is always here to support you—whether it’s tackling big goals or letting go of what no longer serves you.
