Business owners need to move away from fighting fires and instead focus on being proactive

If you want to run a business and make it successful, it’s important to know how to play to your strengths. It’s rather easy to get a grasp of everything and be a micromanager. Business owners tend to think that they can get things done better and more efficiently than anyone else by doing that.

However, all that time and effort that you are spending doing tasks that other people could be doing is time that you are not running your business. You are not being an effective leader if you’re wasting your time doing things you shouldn’t be doing.

As a Business Coach, I always encourage my clients to work on their business, not in their business.

As the leader of an enterprise, a lot of stuff will need your attention, so you need to learn how to filter each one based on urgency and importance. But what does that even mean? Remember, not because something is urgent does it mean that it’s important.

Business owners often a lot of things on their plate, but that don’t mean they have to do all of those tasks. Learning how to prioritise is crucial. Most tasks are important and urgent so they have to be dealt with promptly. But some tasks neither important nor urgent, and those are just distractions that keep you from being truly productive.

So what is The Zone?

That’s when you take on responsibilities that are not urgent but extremely important in growing your company. Being in The Zone means you’re working on the business and not in the business. My aim as a Business Coach is to get my clients into that zone for 20% of their working day, because that is where the real money is made and where real value is added.

For every one minute you spend in that zone and being proactive with your time, you’re going save 10 minutes having to be reactive. It’s a 10 to 1 ratio. Surely we owe it to ourselves to get into that zone.

As the leader of your business, you are responsible for recognising problems and delegating solutions. You are responsible for establishing objectives and planning for the future. You should be the foremost person in your company who is strongly motivated to achieve business growth. Every minute that you spend working on tasks that your people can take care of is a minute that you are not planning, strategising and envisioning the future of your business.

You’re not really making the most out of your precious time if you’re busy putting out fires and tinkering on every single facet of your business. You need to learn to trust your people and the system, so you can focus on the things that really matter. No one else is going to have to concentrate on growing your business but yourself.
