A few weeks ago, I was on my way to a football match. Jas usually goes, but he was a bit under the weather that day, so I went instead—which was a bit random for me. I don’t mind watching football, even though I’m not a massive football fan. Last year, our team got promoted…but this year? Well… let’s just say the final score isn’t in yet. The drive to the game did give me some good thinking time.
Following a football team is full of highs and lows. Sometimes you’re flying high and everything clicks. Other times, you’re riddled with injuries, out of sync, and wondering how it all slipped away. It’s unpredictable, emotional, and at times, downright exhausting.
And it reminds me a lot of running a business. You can go from promotion to the threat of relegation in the blink of an eye. One minute you’re on a roll with great momentum, and the next you’re reacting to setbacks you didn’t see coming—an unexpected team member leaving, a tough month for sales, or simply feeling off your game. Like football, business has seasons too. And like football, you have to know the score.
Jas often says, “If you don’t know the score, you don’t know who’s winning.” And he’s right.
