Around this time last year, my daughter passed her driving test, and it got me thinking about the parallels between learning to drive and running a business.
When you first get behind the wheel, there’s that phase where you’re consciously competent—you know what you need to do, but you have to think through every step. You’re aware of your actions, and you make deliberate choices to ensure you’re on the right path.
But here’s the thing: in business, it’s easy to slip into a state of unconscious incompetence. It’s like driving on autopilot. You think you know what you’re doing, but without realising it, you might start drifting off course. Just like when you’re following a sat nav and it takes you a millimetre off track—what seems like a small deviation can lead to a completely different destination.
Running a business is much the same. The longer we’re at the helm, the more comfortable we become, and sometimes that comfort leads to complacency. We believe we’ve got everything under control, but without regular check-ins, we might be veering off course without even noticing.
Think about a rocket launched to the moon. If it’s just one millimetre off at the start, it won’t reach its intended destination. In business, it’s crucial to continually reassess your direction and make sure you’re still on the right path. It’s about being conscious of your decisions, staying aware of your goals, and making the necessary adjustments to ensure success.
If this resonates with you, maybe it’s time to take a step back and reassess where you’re headed. Are you still on track? Are you making the right choices for your business?
