Operations Manager

Jas shares his wisdom, he’s open and encourages you to look at yourself differently. You have to put in the work and be ready to work on yourself and the business – which we are. It’s true to say we’ve never looked back.

What were the drivers for your wanting to work with a Business Coach?

Robert Gill and Nick Moore started Link Engineering in 2019 – they’re both Chartered engineers. From the very beginning, they were mindful that although they’re good engineers and had some business awareness from previous roles, running their own business was going to be quite different. They knew that learning about strategy and day-to-day business operations would play a key part in their success – and they were open to this.

Jas helped us with all the documentation so that we could track and measure our numbers each month, which then helped to create our business plan. Without Jas, we wouldn’t have the financial clarity that we do now.

Why did you choose REACH Business Coaching?

Jas came highly recommended. We got chatting to one of our business associates who is also being coached by him – so you could say they planted the seed. I think we also recognised that we would benefit from some outside expertise. So, we had an initial chat with Jas, and it went from there. Jas and Angela are so welcoming – such lovely people.

What were some of your specific challenges and outcomes?

After a successful first year in business, the big challenge was how Nick and Rob were going to scale it up to become more successful, which was a driver for pursuing our business coaching from REACH.

Jas is working with us to develop ours. It can be tough running your own business so when we go through bad patches, Jas encourages us – he’s our biggest cheerleader.

Financials

A big one for us was mastering the financial side of the business. We recognised that it was important to really understand our numbers, our management and financial accounts and our potential. Jas helped us with all the documentation so that we could track and measure our numbers each month, which then helped to create our business plan. Without Jas, we wouldn’t have the financial clarity that we do now.

Systems and Processes

We learned from Jas that to grow and become more successful, we have to have robust systems and processes in place.

In our early days, we recruited from our network, whereas more recently we’ve needed to embed systems and processes into our recruitment approach to source the right talent.

We wanted to have in place a set of documents for our own technical processes, to enable the team to work consistently. What we have now is our ‘Flow Approach’ which is brilliant because it means the whole team is working to the same standards. When new people come on board, that’s what we use to train them. The advantage for our clients is that in essence, they’re getting Nick and Rob’s technical capabilities because we’ve embedded them into our workflows and systems. It’s a win-win for everyone. When our ‘Flow Approach’ is ready for updating, we can do that – it’s a live set of documents that are evolving all the time.

It can be frustrating at times, and we can feel guilty for not toeing the line, but we really value the respect Jas has for himself. That’s his job – holding us accountable. That’s why it works – it’s why we get results.

Mindset

We started working with Jas just before we went into lockdown – he guided us through it. Although our workload wasn’t affected, he helped us with our development planning and how to manage the team. We’re an office-based business so it was tough with everyone working from home, especially for junior members who were still learning the ropes.

Something we’ve learnt, is the significance of our mindset. It’s super critical. We’re all on different paths, but I would say it’s the single most valuable thing for us, along with our values. Jas is working with us to develop ours. It can be tough running your own business so when we go through bad patches, Jas encourages us – he’s our biggest cheerleader.

What is it about Jas you’re buying into?

His sense of belief in you – working with Jas helps us to believe in ourselves. The work he does around mindset is absolutely vital when you’re running your own business.

He has a level of calmness and a real motivation to get you to where you want to be. But we have to play our part too. Jas is very strict on making sure we get our documentation to him 24-hours before our one-to-one coaching session. He emphasises that these are the ‘rules of the game’ and he’s spot on. It’s so easy to let things slip – we like the high standards he sets us. It can be frustrating at times, and we can feel guilty for not toeing the line, but we really value the respect Jas has for himself. That’s his job – holding us accountable. That’s why it works – it’s why we get results.

What would you say to someone thinking about working with a Business Coach?

Go for it. It’s so beneficial to have someone external and independent working with you. Jas shares his wisdom, he’s open and encourages you to look at yourself differently. You have to put in the work and be ready to work on yourself and the business – which we are. It’s true to say we’ve never looked back.
