There a lot of misconceptions about what the essence of Business Coaching really is
People often ask me what exactly it is that I do when I’m coaching business owners like you. Most of them probably have their own ideas of what Business Coaching really is, and more often than not their understanding of what I do is limited to the concept of consultancy. But as a matter of fact, that’s not what I do. I don’t do the work.
So what I tell them is this: Primarily, my job as a coach is to change a business owner’s habit of a lifetime — the habit that says his only job is to put out fires and react to things that happen in the business.
Now those are the normal things a business owner must do in the early stages of a business, and that’s okay. However, if he has a desire to grow his business beyond its current capabilities, then that mindset has to be challenged.
What exactly am I talking about?
Let’s say part of my job was to give a business owner a list of ten things to do for his business. Now, nine of those are related to working in the business and one is about working on the business. Naturally, at the end of the day when I came back, the nine tasks related to working in the business would’ve already been accomplished, because that’s part of their normal job. However, business owners would often say they’re too busy or they ran out of time to do task #10 which is about working on the business.
My job is to turn that list on its head and get them to do #10 FIRST.
That’s because working on your business is where the growth is going to come. And if you neglect that very crucial part of the strategy, then unfortunately nobody else is going to do it for you. All I’ll be asking from you is to invest a tenth of your efforts in working on your business and building towards not just sustenance but growth.
My job as a coach is educate you as a team, and then to empower you to make sure that you get done what needs to get done to move your business forwards. That, in its essence, is what I’m about.
