Successfully managing time can considerably improve efficiency as a leader

A business leader’s responsibility is to launch, execute, grow and scale a business. That’s something that requires a lot of brains to be able to do a lot of research, networking, planning, business strategy, marketing, sales, and other activities that will ensure the survival of the company.

Entrepreneurs have to juggle between tasks, hop on calls, attend events, and be extra cautious with each and every decision for their business venture. That’s the reason why managing time properly is a priceless skill and tremendously fulfilling in the long run.

No matter how hard you work day in and day out, your efforts would still go to waste unless you learn how to make the most of your time.

Transform hefty problems into simple tasks

Racking your brain to address certain business situations requires a lot of energy and can be avoided by simplifying your problems. Being a time management guru entails establishing a process and breaking it down into small operations that are easy to grasp and don’t require rigorous efforts and time-wasting. Take a complex task and decomposes it into pieces, thus making the remaining process easier for the team to comprehend and follow.

Form a prioritisation structure

The trick is not to prioritise what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. Priorities may differ among businesses and are shaped around deadlines, the significance of execution, possible ROI and reach. But because we’re so caught up with our ‘checklist’, we tend to neglect more important things that bring value in the long run. It may cause us to focus on a single process for weeks and leave everything else in the backlog.

Learn to prioritise both long-term activities that gain momentum later in time, and short-term goals necessary for gradual results.

Get rid of unnecessary meetings (or at least lessen them)

Remember that nothing really gets done during meetings. Yes, it involves talking and strategising and communicating, but there’s a lot of other ways to do that instead of pulling out everybody and listening to several people speak — or in your case as a business leader, having everybody listen to you. Meetings have to be done at some point, but when you do, make sure it involves only the pertinent people, and that the content of the meeting is not something that could have been carried out through email.

Go for scheduled breaks just for brainstorming

Brainstorming helps you work “in” the business and not just “on” the business. Business leaders often lose perspective on the bigger picture whenever they are knee-deep in overwhelming responsibilities.

Take regular breaks between activities and align your progress with your targets. Go out and take a walk, get some fresh air and relax for a moment.  Let creative ideas flow.

Master the art of delegation

Effective time management also means being effective in delegating work. When you actually do this, you’ll notice how your role and work output will transition to the next level. Know what parts you do well yourself and then tap someone from your team to perform whatever tasks you feel do not play to your strengths. Then let go and allow people to observe accountability.
