When we were in San Francisco a few months ago, one of the things that really stopped us in our tracks wasn’t just the steep hills, the cable cars, or even the Golden Gate Bridge (although we couldn’t resist having our photo taken with this one). More than anything, it was the driverless cars. We’ve heard of them, we’ve seen them in videos, but seeing them in person was something else.

They were gliding silently through the streets, turning corners, stopping at lights, and reacting to the world around them without a person behind the wheel. It felt weird,  futuristic, almost unnerving. But looking back, I think about the sheer trust people were putting in the technology to do the job properly.

It got me thinking. How much do we trust the systems in our own businesses to keep things running smoothly when we’re not at the wheel? Could your business “self-drive” for a day, a week, or even a month without you there to steer every turn? Or would it drift off course the moment you step away?
