As a flourishing business owner, it’s important to know how to play to your strengths. It's rather easy to fiddle with everything and be a micromanager. Most people I’ve worked with have a habit of thinking that they can get things done better and more efficiently than anyone else by working on every little thing that passes their way.
However, all that time and effort that you are spending doing tasks that other people could be doing is time that you are not running your business. You are not being an effective manager if you’re wasting your time doing things you shouldn’t be doing.
As a Business Coach, I’ve always stimulated my clients to work on their business, not in their business.
A lot of things will need your attention if you’re in charge, so you need to learn how to filter each one based on urgency and importance. But what does that even mean? Remember, not because something is urgent doesn’t mean it’s important.
Business owners often a lot of things on their plate, but that don’t mean they have to do all of those tasks. Learning how to prioritise is an essential skill. Most tasks are important and urgent so they have to be dealt with promptly. But some tasks neither important nor urgent, and those are just distractions that keep you from being truly productive.
What is “The Zone” and why it’s important
When you take on responsibilities that are not urgent but extremely important in growing your company, that’s what it’s like being in The Zone. It means you’re working on the business and not in the business. My aim as a Business Coach is to get my clients into that zone for 20% of their working day, because that is where the real money is made and where real value is added.
For every one minute you spend in that zone and being proactive with your time, you're going save 10 minutes having to be reactive. It's a 10 to 1 ratio. Surely we owe it to ourselves to get into that zone.
As the leader of your business, you are responsible for recognising problems and delegating solutions. You are responsible for establishing objectives and planning for the future. You should be the foremost person in your company who is strongly motivated to achieve business growth.
Every minute that you spend working on tasks that your people can take care of is a minute that you are not planning, strategising and envisioning the future of your business.
You’re not really making the most out of your precious time if you’re busy putting out fires and tinkering on every single facet of your business. You need to learn to trust your people and the system, so you can focus on the things that really matter. No one else is going to have to concentrate on growing your business but yourself.
