Gaining clarity in terms of personal and business objectives is key

In business, it’s important to start with the end in mind.

If you’re going somewhere you’ve never been before, you would normally tap in the coordinates to a Sat Nav. Now let’s say you’re going to a new village or town. If all you put it was the name of the town, you’re most like gonna get close, and you’ll end up somewhere in that town. Whereas, if you put in the exact coordinates of your destination, you’re much more likely to end up exactly where you want to be.

That’s the importance of getting clarity on destination. It’s called Destination Mastery. It’s the first of the 5 main components of Mastery.

Destination Mastery starts with the ‘why’. What is your ‘why’?

Remember, it’s a personal thing. It’s something bigger than the business. You may want to look back to when you first started the business and ask yourself the question, “Why did I go into business in the first place?” That might rekindle some of those flames, some of the ambitions and some of that enthusiasm that might have got dampened in the course of time.

Gaining clarity on the personal why comes first. Once you do know what your personal why is, you need a business that has got a vision that’s gonna help you achieve that ‘why’.

Remember: the business should be the vehicle that you sit on to take you to your life’s objectives; it shouldn’t be the one that crushes it. Unfortunately for most people, it is. But I’m telling you now that it doesn’t have to be that way.

You need a strong business vision. What does the business stand for? What is it designed to achieve? And will it help you achieve your personal objectives? Because if it doesn’t, there is going to be a massive disconnect going on all the time.

Once you have the business vision, you can start putting into place the strategy. What does the business need to do in order to achieve its vision and your personal ‘why’? The strategy is where all the detail comes in. We start looking at how we’re gonna get that clarity and what the objectives and the measurements are.

So that’s how those things tie in.

See, what’s happens is that most businesses are like this: You’ve got all the components of the business but they’re all over the place. It’s just a jumbled up mess of different components. But once we have clarity on the ‘why’, and we have clarity on the business vision, and we have clarity on the strategy, then it’s all aligned. And it’s all pointing towards the most important thing: our personal objectives. That is the sequence that we need to understand when it comes to destination mastery at the start.

Now, a lot of this is about writing goals. You see, what we find is that only 3% of people write down their goals and have them visible on a daily basis.  And that 3% accounts for 97% of the wealth of that study. Now that can’t be a fluke.

If there’s one thing you can take away from this lesson, it’s that you need to write down your goals, but more importantly, have them visible to you on a daily basis. You’ll be amazed at what that does to the subconscious part of our brain.
